Bruno Barilli was known to be a music critic with peculiar characteristics. Unlike many colleagues, he did not often deal with the subject of technique and musicology, for him the impression of a work was important.

Bruno Barilli (Fano, December 14, 1880 – Rome, April 15, 1952) was an Italian writer and music critic. He grew up with his father Cecopre, a painter, and his mother Anna in Parma where he immediately demonstrated his passion for music. In fact, he is enrolled in the Arrigo Boito Conservatory is he then specializes in orchestral conducting in Munich.
This study opens up many avenues for him but he decides to take that of music critic and thus begins his career in Munich, a city that allows him to also meet Danitza, a Serbian student with whom he will later have his daughter Milena, known in the field of painting.
A life between composition, criticism and writing
Despite the firm choice for his career, he still decides to compose two plays. The first, “Jellyfish” it is a work in three acts that he made in 1910 when he returned to Milan and which allowed him to win a well-known competition.
The second, “Emiral” it is even more acclaimed and wins numerous awards including the one chaired by Giacomo Puccini.
He then moved to Rome where he dedicated himself to his column in the magazine “La Ronda” while attending the Caffè Aragno together with the brightest minds of the capital. He also continues to devote himself to criticism, his great passion.
Reflections on music and the end of a career
He also devotes himself to writing and in fact realizes in 1929 “The land of melodrama” together with other colleagues dedicating himself to some classics of the genre including the works of Giuseppe Verdi.
Later he also writes “Delirama”, “The mouse in the violin” is “The sun in the trap” who writes after a trip to Africa. With a life full of achievements in the world of music, he died at the age of 71 in Rome, a place that for many years he could call home.
