The ice diet, the latest in weight loss: this is how it works

Created by American gastroenterologist Brian Weiner, the ice diet is based on the energy used by the body to reach normal temperature. But why should this diet work? The reasons are essentially two: our body consumes calories by melting the ice taken and the ice causes an instant sense of satiety that leads us not to take any other food outside of the main meals. As reported on the doctor’s website, ingesting a liter of ice a day would have no contraindications, and would actually allow you to burn about 160 calories.

To promote his method, Weiner refers to human biology and explains that when ice is ingested, the body produces energy to melt it and to do so it consumes calories, thus causing weight loss. As reported by The Atlantic, its inventor, who also wrote an e-book on the matter, ‘The ice diet’ – is convinced that ice is a true friend of the line since it helps to burn calories without taking on additional ones, starting from the assumption that the body consumes energy to dissolve it. “Ingesting ice has no contraindications up to a liter a day and those who ingested more have reported only a constant sense of cold”, explains Weiner to corroborate his thesis. The diet, however, is not recommended when you are in places characterized by low temperatures (so as not to feel further cold) and when the body is too overheated, for example after physical activity. “In this case, part of the heat generated by physical exercise would be neutralized by the cold of the ice, minimizing the benefits of the diet in terms of calorie consumption”, emphasizes Weiner who specifies how the results of this method can be found only if mixed with syrups without sugar, for which ice creams and alcoholic cocktails are banned. But how should this ice be taken. Brian Weiner recommends doing this. Chop the ice as to make a cocktail, put it in a glass and pour a light infusion of your choice. The important thing is not to add any type of sweetener or fruit that contains sugar. Green light for herbs and spices such as cinnamon, pink pepper, sage, mint, lime and ginger. Obviously there is no shortage of skeptics: physicist Andrew Jones, for example, says it is not an effective system. In his opinion, if eating one kilogram of ice burns 117 calories, to burn the 3,500 calories needed to lose half a kilo of weight, you would need to consume 30.

If you have a lot of kilos to lose (and little time) follow the “liquid diet”
