Who was Eugen Ionescu
Eugen Ionescu (Slatina, November 26, 1912 – Paris, March 28, 1994), was a Romanian playwright.
He grew up with a French mother of Greek and Romanian origins and a Romanian father in Paris, where he moved a year after his birth. Here lives the experience of WWI which strongly marks his childhood.
With the divorce of his parents he returned to Romania and here he began part of his studies and became passionate about theater. Meanwhile he enrolled at the University of Bucharest begins publish his first texts and articles, often also very critical. In fact, he accuses the Romanian writers of not being original enough and directs them through a pamphlet.

The creation and identity of the New Theater
With the end of the Second World War, mankind is deeply shaken and confused, dominated by a feeling of the absurd which derives from the course of events. Thus one emerges desire for rebirth which is achieved through new artistic forms that find a way to renew themselves.
The New Theater was born exactly with this function and due to its characteristics it is also called “Theater of the absurd”. It questions traditional theater by rejecting the aura of realism which has remained as a hallmark for too many years. Furthermore, according to Ionescu, a work cannot have only a playful purpose, but it must be helpful to man in communicating with the other.
