Ettore Scola (Trevico, 10 May 1931 – Rome, 19 January 2016) was an Italian film director.
He was born in the province of Avellino but grew up in Rome, precisely in the Esquilino district where he was able to attend schools. His own begins right on the benches of the Pilo Albertelli passion for art, at this moment in particular he is dedicated to the creation of humorous cartoons for Marc’Aurelio, a well-known weekly.
This experience is extremely important to him because it allows him to reflect on the expressiveness and caricature of the characters which he will later deal with in a different way. His pastime allows him to learn great things and at the same time to make himself known for his humor that will also characterize him as a director.
The beginning and success of Ettore Scola’s career
In fact, around the 1950s, he decided to devote himself to world of cinematography how screenwriter.
Often paired with Ruggero Maccari he finds himself writing for the well-known genre of Italian comedies and also collaborating with radio and television programs for the realization of some varieties.
Only then is it launched as film director making himself known in 1968 with “Will our heroes be able to find their friend who has mysteriously disappeared in Africa?” directing actors such as Alberto Sordi and Nino Manfredi. Not just the only ones great actorsi with whom he collaborates, in fact for the realization of his most successful films he also remembers the collaboration with Vittorio Gassman, Vittorio De Sica and many others.
Between best known titles of the seventies of the great director are remembered, “The most beautiful evening of my life” of 1972, “We loved each other so much” of 1974 and “The new monsters” of 1977. With some of these projects he now obtains a international fame making himself appreciated for masterpieces such as “A special day” with Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren.
Private life and acknowledgments of Ettore Scola
With the beginning of the new decade his new projects they are welcomed with great enthusiasm. In fact, we remember films such as “The family”, “Splendor” or “Che ora è” which saw the participation of actors of great caliber from which he has already had a demonstration of talent such as Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni and Massimo Troisi.
Ettore Scola’s latest highly successful project takes the name of “What a strange name to be Federico”, a documentary on the life of the great director Federico Fellini. Present the film to the Venice Film Festival out of competition, receiving great accolades from audiences and critics. Among the awards obtained in his life there are also eight David by Donatello and several Oscar nominations in the “best foreign film” category.
In his private Scola he took part in the committee of a public and free school of art and cinema in the city of Rome. Cinema was also part of his love story as he was married to the director Gigliola Fantoni with whom he had two daughters. These too have entered the sector by making a documentary called “Laughing and joking”.
