Who is Emanuele Trevi: all about the writer

The debut in 2003, a place in five already ten years ago with “Something Written “ and finally the victory at the Premio Strega 2021: let’s find out who Emanuele Trevi is.

Who is Emanuele Trevi

Class 1964, Roman, Emanuele Trevi is one writer and literary critic famous to the Italian public.

Passionate about writing from an early age, he has an edgy style, which mixes nonfiction elements with classic fiction, his novels, in fact, are not “pure” novels, like his latest Two lives with which it was awarded the Strega Award. Reserved about his private life, the author was married to the writer Chiara Gamberale and is the son of the Jungian psychoanalyst Mario Trevi. To his mother, who recently passed away, he dedicated the victory of this last prestigious award.

Emanuele Trevi, not only a writer of essays and novels, collaborates with Radio 3 and with newspapers such as Corriere della Sera and the Manifest. He is also editor for magazines such as New Topics is The illustrated coffee.

Career

1994 is the year of the author’s first essay, Instructions for use of the wolf (Castelvecchi), written in the form of a letter to his friend Marco Lodoli, while theliterary debut arrives in 2003 with The dogs of nothingness (Einaudi).

During his career he was also creative director of Fazi Editore and he edited the school anthology with the aforementioned friend Lodoli Stories of life (Zanichelli).

Later he translated and edited editions of classics Italian and French, including texts dedicated to Leopardi, Salgari and other Italian authors of the twentieth century.

Works and awards

Thanks to his works Emanuele Trevi becomes more and more appreciated by the public and collects several awards. Already in 2004, one year after his debut, with the book-reportage on the poet Pietro Tripodo Without verse. A summer in Rome (Laterza) wins the Sandro Onofri Prize, while in 2010 he wins the Napoli Prize with The book of perpetual joy (Rizzoli). With Dreams and fairy tales (Ponte alle Grazie) in 2019 he received the Viareggio Prize for fiction.

By only two votes behind the winner he comes second in the final of the Premio Strega in 2012 with Something written, but in this 75th edition with Two lives he can finally toast his victory with Strega liqueur.

The final, held at the Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome, sanctioned the first success in this award ceremony not only for the author but also for the publishing house of the novel, Neri Pozza.

As the title already anticipates, “Two lives” is the author’s reflection on his own friendship with two writers and intellectuals, Rocco Carbone and Pia Pera, both of whom died prematurely. In the novel, difficult to place in a specific genre, Trevi tells the stories of the two protagonists, their personalities and their relationship with writing and friendship. A personal story then, but come on harsh tones, in which both the great void left by friends and the pain of having lost them emerge. However, as stated by the author himself, writing is an effective way to remember and therefore fill nostalgia of lost friends.
