Oxygene on Netflix: plot

Oxygene is a Netflix original film released in streaming on the platform on May 12, 2021, directed by Alexandre Aja. It is a sci-fi thriller that immediately captures the viewer, dragging him into the claustrophobic nightmare and without memories of the woman protagonist. The film is all about one character, this one woman trapped in a cryogenic capsule and who does not remember anything about herself, not even his name.

Forced by wires and devices, the woman will try to understand why she is there and how to free herself.

Its only interlocutor is a machine, an artificial intelligence called MILO which calls it the ‘Omicron-267 bioform’. What makes the film more and more suffocating is above all the fact that the oxygen in the capsule is about to run out and the countdown is a source of anxiety and despair not only for the trapped woman, but also for the viewer who identifies with the story.

The question that hangs in my head from the beginning to the end of the film is: will the capsule be a trap or a new rebirth, a salvation for the protagonist?

Oxygene on Netflix: plot and cast

Obviously the plot is all focused on the protagonist, closed in the cryogenic capsule, whose name is unknown except that given by the machine: Omicron-267 bioform. To dominate is therefore the performance and expressiveness of the French actress Melanie Laurent, also known for her career as a director and singer. Many will remember actress Melanie Laurent for her performance in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film, Inglourious Basterds, in which she played the runaway Jewess Shoshanna who will ultimately take revenge on the death of her family. In Tarantino’s film, Laurent starred alongside great Hollywood actors such as Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender. In the filmography of the actress there are also other famous films such as Now You See Me – Crime Wizards of 2013, Mia and the white lion, films of 2018 and 6 Underground of 2019 directed by Michael Bay.

The cast of the Netflix movie Oxygene also appears Mathieu Amalric, an actor well known especially in France for having collected three Cesar awards, one of which for the film The diving suit and the butterfly of 2007. In the film Oxygene Amalric plays the machine MILO. Malik Zidi instead plays the role of Leo Ferguson.

Oxygene on Netflix: plot and curiosity

Behind the film directed by Alexandre Aja there are a series of curiosities to reveal. First of all, the film was originally supposed to be called ‘O2‘and above all it had to include the actress in the cast Anne Hathaway who would also be the producer. Hathaway would later give up, giving way to Noomi Rapace.

For the claustrophobic setting, filming and focus on a single character, Oxygene is very reminiscent of the film Buried of 2010 directed by Rodrigo Cortés.
