Come summer, your handbags are your true partners in crime. There’s no such thing as fun in the sun without the perfect bag in hand to carry all your seasonal essentials: Sun screen, lip balm, swimsuit, water bottle. It’s time to find that perfect, on-trend bag that won’t leave your side. Luckily, the runways had some hints as to what bags will be must-haves come summer. And they’re sure to breathe some fresh air into your warm-weather wardrobe. Ahead, the handbags we can’t wait to add to cart for a season of adventures—from updated beach bags to something green.
Without doubt, Bottega Veneta’s cloud-like, oversized leather pouch bag, spotted on every street-style star worth their followers, was the bag of 2019. It didn’t seem to matter that we couldn’t go hands-free – we liked the feeling of hugging our belongings close, and our brand affiliations closer. As for the 2020 update? Clutched to our sides this year will be a mix of styles not seen since the early 2000s. First up, there’s Givenchy’s roomy-but-sleek slouch clutch in a host of colours (note the raffia), a series of snap-fasten purses at Balenciaga, some vintage-inspired styles at Celine, and some puffy options at Dries Van Noten. We’ll even be imitating the clutch look with more two-in-one strap bags: see Alexander McQueen and Hugo Boss’s spring/summer 2020 runways for a guide to the hug-and-tuck techniques.
We love a bucket bag here at British Vogue, so much so that at any one moment, no matter the time of year, you’ll be able to spot a whole host of styles stashed under the desks at Vogue House. Some designers are clearly plugged in: the bucket bag shape got a lot more airtime on the runway this season. Neutral hues that go with everything will be the most timeless purchases – here are our favourites. You’re welcome.

No summer would be complete without a kaleidoscopic pop of bright colour. Kelly green, tangerine orange and classic cobalt blue (Pantone’s colour of the year) may be having their moment in the ready-to-wear stakes, but a paintbox bright handbag is a less intense way to ease yourself into the trend. Quilted Chanel is always a good idea, as is Fendi’s take on its Peekaboo style in woven yellow leather.
