During the extraordinary emergency that hit the whole world in 2020, our national system passed a real “stress test” proving a more than good resistance. However, the words with honey that our politicians have filled their mouths regarding the effectiveness of Italian healthcare clash with a somewhat different reality. Although the Italian health system guarantees a good level, especially in consideration of the fact that it is financed with public money, according to some recent studies it is certainly not considered the best, indeed it is not even among the ten most efficient in the world.
In fact, research from The Legatum Institute indicates a barely decent placement. Italy wins only the 30th position in the ranking of the best world health systems published on the Travel365.it website
Other nations rule the scene, mostly Northern Europe (with 6 top 10 places) and Asia (with 4 places, two of which on the top steps of the podium).
The top seeds are in fact Singapore, which establishes itself as the nation with the most efficient healthcare system, Japan, which wins the silver medal and Switzerland which from the third step of the podium looks down on all the Western states.
Below is the complete TOP 10:
- Singapore
- Japan
- Switzerland
- South Korea
- Norway
- Hong Kong
- Iceland
- Denmark
- Austria
- Holland
Italy therefore proves to be a mediocre reality also in the health sector, a sector that in truth has long been one of the country’s flagships in the past and a source of pride in Europe.
The loss of positioning is probably attributable to years of government cuts. Cuts on which we have recently returned to debate precisely on the occasion of the COVID19 emergency.
The hope is that this terrible emergency will bring to public attention an issue of national interest, which should be of paramount importance in the economy of any self-respecting state.
